Wood Construction is an Environmentally Friendly Option
Wood construction is a growing form of building. As a material, wood is an environmentally friendly and functional alternative to concrete and steel structures, as well as for renovation projects. Wood can be used to construct tall and visually impressive public buildings such as schools, libraries, and sports halls, as well as residential apartment buildings, industrial and storage halls, wooden bridges, and other buildings and structures.
Wood is a viable alternative to concrete and steel structures, especially when considering its workability and environmental friendliness.
Advantages of Wood Construction
Wood has many benefits in construction use:
- Easier installation and machining compared to other materials
- Excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
- The framework can withstand full loads immediately after installation.
- Machining can be completed at the factory.
- Flexibility in construction conditions
- Environmentally friendly, as wood products consume less energy in production than other building materials and sequester carbon dioxide throughout the product’s lifecycle.
- Fire-resistant, as the charred surface of wood slows the spread of fire, with a charring rate of 0.7mm/min for glulam.
- Flexible design, allowing for long spans.
Additionally, wood material helps improve indoor air quality as it is antibacterial and balances indoor humidity. From an aesthetic perspective, wood surfaces create a sense of calm and warmth in a space. Using wood indoors reduces stress levels and balances temperature. Read more about thermal properties.
Design and Solutions for Projects
Our strong expertise and diverse experience in designing and constructing various glulam structures are at your disposal for building projects. We offer our customers expert design services and project-specific tailored solutions.
Through our cut-to-size service, it is possible to order glulam beams in desired lengths, reducing waste and speeding up work on-site. The use of prefabricated building products particularly accelerates the construction phase.
With CNC machines, precise and consistent notches, slots, holes, angled cuts, grooves, and milling can be achieved.
Applications and Examples of Wood Use
Our wood construction products have been used in a variety of applications. The examples below show how wooden apartment buildings, public buildings, and large-span structures such as halls and bridges have achieved functional structures and visual appeal with Versowood’s high-quality products.
Visual appeal in construction can be achieved with glulam columns for facades and curved beams for roof structures.
Glulam for Halls, Schools, Residential Buildings, and wooden Bridges
Glulam is suitable for demanding applications and enhances the visual appeal of buildings. It is a strong yet lightweight construction material. In addition to its many advantages, glulam is also fire-safe, as its load-bearing capacity remains intact for a long time in fire situations.
Kuningaspaneeli® for Exterior Cladding
Our Kuningaspaneeli® adds visual appeal to exterior cladding in residential and commercial buildings. Made from strength-graded and split glulam, Kuningaspaneeli provides continuous wall surfaces cost-effectively.
Products for Wood Construction
Glulam for Projects
Project-specific tailored glulam structures for construction projects..
Glulam Beams
Glulam beams with the Key Flag Symbol as standard products for load-bearing structures, such as load-bearing pillars and beams or posts.
Kuningaspaneeli ®
Kuningaspaneeli® cladding retains its appearance, shape, and dimensions better than traditional exterior cladding panels due to its massive and glued structure. It provides impressive exterior cladding quickly and cost-effectively. Widths: 112mm, 212mm, and 312mm. Length up to 12m.
Construction Board
Construction boards made from Finnish planed spruce. Suitable for packaging, concrete formwork, temporary structures, construction site fences, and wall structures of small yard buildings.
Intermediate Floor Beam
Load-bearing Verso intermediate floor beam made from strength-graded sawn timber to replace traditional solid and laminated wood structures. Split glulam strength class GL30cs.
Sawn Timber
Our sawn timber quality is ensured by slowly grown and dense-grained Finnish softwood. Quality is achieved in sawing. Production is carefully planned and monitored from X-ray sorting onwards. This ensures high-quality, dimensionally accurate sawn timber tailored to customer needs.
Finger-Jointed Sawn Timber
We produce CE-approved finger-jointed structural sawn timber in various strength classes for special length requirements. Suitable for structural applications such as roof trusses. Standard widths 98-220 mm. Transparent MF and MUF adhesives suitable for outdoor use.
Strength-Graded Sawn Timber
For wood structures requiring special durability. We produce CE-approved structural sawn timber in various strength classes: C18, C24 (stock product), C30, and C35.
Treated Sawn Timber
Applications requiring weather resistance:
- Class A: Structures in direct contact with soil, water, or concrete, such as piers, poles, fence posts, and load-bearing structures.
- Class AB: Above-ground structures, such as terraces, outdoor furniture, and exterior cladding.
Standard dimensions: Terrace boards (Class AB): 28x95, 28x120, 28x145 mm. Structural timber (Class A): 48x98, 48x123, 48x148, 48x198 mm.
Planed, Dimensioned Sawn Timber
Floorboards, slats, and panels dimensioned and profiled to meet builders’ needs. We plane panels and dimensioned and strength-graded sawn timber to provide precise dimensions, smooth surfaces, and various profiles. Planing reduces work stages and material waste on-site.
Exterior Cladding Boards
Exterior cladding products from visually sorted sawn timber, also pre-primed. Priming protects the timber during construction. Standard thickness 20-22 mm and standard width 95-145 mm. Suitable for exterior panels, eaves boards, cladding, corner boards, and trim boards.
Carbon-Neutral Construction
Wood is the only fully renewable building material. Wood structures store carbon dioxide for up to hundreds of years, and their production consumes less energy than other building materials. Wood products can also be recycled without environmental harm.
Finland has set a goal to be carbon-neutral by 2035. According to the Low-Carbon Construction Industry report commissioned by the construction product industry in 2023, about 15% of the carbon footprint of the building stock and construction industry is formed by the materials used in construction.
Versowood
We are Finland’s largest private producer of sawn timber and supplier of wood products, as well as a pioneer in wood processing.
